Time + Tide Chongwe House rests on a peaceful stretch of the Chongwe River, set against a beautiful mountainous backdrop.

A two-storey, four-bedroom, four-bathroom private house, its design blends effortlessly into the undulating landscape around it, with river pebble accents and furniture carved from a fallen winterthorn tree. The house sleeps four to eight people and features private open-air bathtubs and waterfall showers, a large pool and spacious indoor and outdoor lounges with dining areas perfect for spending time together.

Listen to fish eagle calls and the faint sound of a resident family of warthogs ‘mowing’ the grass outside. Watch elephants wade across the river right in front of the house. Savour fine dining in the wild, featuring local and seasonal ingredients.

Kakuli, meaning old buffalo bull, was the nickname given by locals to Norman Carr, the pioneer of walking safaris.

Its five bright and airy safari tents (including a two-bedroom, two-bathroom family safari tent) are designed to make the most of the panoramic setting, each offering a feather-top bed, indoor and outdoor showers and a covered open-air seating area.

The elevated main lounge overlooks the river and a permanent lagoon. Beneath it, a wildlife hide offers up-close views of visitors stopping by for a drink. Take a deep breath and admire the sweeping vista with a refreshing drink of your own before sampling traditional Zambian dishes at dinner.

The camp makes a great base for exploring by vehicle and on foot, with a resident lion pride, a seasonal colony of jewel-like carmine bee-eaters and the most sightings of leopards in a single drive every year. Mchenja is the local name for ebony, and the camp is tucked into a shady ebony grove beside the Luangwa River in the heart of South Luangwa National Park.

Its five safari tents (including a two-bedroom, two-bathroom family safari tent) are pure, natural elegance with grass walls, soft cushions and light-as-air curtains. Each has a feather-top bed, large picture windows and open air en-suite bathroom with a bath looking out onto the river.

Miavana is located on the largest of five islands in a remote archipelago off the northeastern coast of Madagascar, accessible only by helicopter from Diego Suarez and Nosy Be airports. Discovered 30 years ago by our partner Jean Christophe, an entrepreneur and treasure hunter who believed in conserving the area, this archipelago is a natural wonderland waiting to be explored.

Miavana has an interesting history – a transient location for seasonal fisherman, then a secret hideaway for pirates, and more recently a thriving seaweed farm, thanks its nutrient-rich waters. In 1998, Ibis Algoculture was created as a way to preserve the area, reduce fishing pressure and provide alternate employment through algae production. Still in operation, the seaweed farm moved to a nearby location and made way for sustainable tourism on Miavana, Madagascar’s most exclusive private island resort with conservation and community at its core.

It took four years to create Miavana. Four years of planting over 100,000 indigenous trees, painstakingly restoring the natural vegetation and using only natural and recycled materials to create the ultimate private villas. Dotted along the pristine beach, Miavana’s 14 villas are a masterpiece in luxury. This camp is named after King Lewanika of the Lozi people, who proclaimed Liuwa Plain a protected area in the early 1880s, making it one of the earliest national parks in Africa.
