Nyerere National Park (Selous Game Reserve)

On a small peninsula overlooking Lake Nzerakera, Roho ya Selous is in the heart of Nyerere National Park (formerly Selous Game Reserve), the largest reserve in Africa and home to one of the biggest populations of wild dogs on the continent. 

It is a wildlife hotspot, with giraffes and elephants regularly sauntering through camp during the day and the sounds of nearby hippos and lions punctuating the night. With its network of lakes and rivers, this area is known for its water-based activities. 

Our eight-tent camp is simple and stylish, with evening-breeze cooling systems above the beds making even the hottest nights more comfortable. During the day, cool off in the pool or spot wildlife making its way to the water from an armchair in our shaded dining tent or lounge area. Out and about, explore by vehicle, on foot or even in a boat, with fishing excursions available.

Sheltered in a grove of palms on the shores of Lake Nzerakera, part of the watery byways of the Rufiji River system, Siwandu is perfectly situated to experience fully the breathtaking landscape and abundant wildlife of the Nyerere National Park (formerly known as the Selous Game Reserve).

An area of 30,893 km2 (11,928 sq mi) in the northern part of the well-known Selous Game Reserve, just South of Dar es Salaam, was portioned off for inclusion in TANAPA’s portfolio of national parks in 2019. It is now one of the world’s largest wildlife sanctuaries at twice the size of Belgium.

Nyerere has over 2,100 species of plants, in excess of 400 varieties of birds, more than half of Tanzania’s elephant population and over 120,000 buffalos. The Parks 40,000 hippo and 4,000 lion are probably the largest populations on the continent; not to mention the fact that it is home to the planet’s largest population of rare wild dogs. This resplendence gives guests a rare opportunity to glimpse all of these animals in truly unspoilt landscape.

Rufiji River Camp enjoys an enviable location high up on the banks of the Great Rufiji River.

Spectacular sunsets are chorused by hippos grunting and a plethora of bird song. Selous Game Reserve is dominated by the Great and Sprawling Rufiji River, so what better place to stay than right along the banks.

Our lodge is so much part of the Rufiji’s ebb and flow that it seems almost moored on the banks, with one side entirely open to the river. Views across its brown, swirling waters call to mind adventure movies from another time. Indeed, in the early days, we pioneered legendary foot safaris here, and we still make life in and around the lodge  as action-packed and exciting as the fizzing natural world around it.

It’s very simple. If you really want to connect with the African bush, just put yourself right out there. Because we know the bush, and we know what’s safe and what’s comfortable, we can make this happen. We desert the lodge and walk with you into the big beyond. The further we go, the deeper the wilderness, the bigger it feels.

At some point, we come upon our camp-out spot and home for one night. There’s a murmur of voices, the fire is lit. It feels secure and cosy, though we know that only the finest line is drawn between us and wild Africa. 

In our fly-camps we strip away all but the basic neccessities to get you as close to the Africa wilderness as you’ll ever want to be. We give you safety and comfort, a proper, sweet sleep under the stars, and a major bucket-list experience. 

Selous River Camps accommodation comprises of nine rooms and four tents. All accommodation is full board - meaning the price includes three meals (breakfast, lunch and dinner) per night booked.

Along the river bank are our unique Mudhuts - each spacious Mudhut has an en-suite bathroom and a view of the Rufiji River. Or, for a more wild experience, we also have simple tents located in our woodland campsite.
