Namib Desert

The lodge is situated within &BEYOND Sossusvlei Private Desert Reserve, a vast 12,715 hectare (31,419 acre) expanse deep in the Namib, the world’s oldest living desert.

Set amidst an ocean of dunes, rocky outcrops and gravel plains, the utter tranquility and extraordinary clarity of light makes this area one of Africa’s most compelling landscapes. The night skies are heavenly, with the concession bordering the International Dark Sky Reserve of the NamibRand Nature Reserve. A canvas of beauty that invites reconnection with yourself and nature.

Sustainability and uncompromised luxury go hand in hand at Sossusvlei. 10 beautifully appointed stone and glass suites, spread out along the curve of the escarpment, open onto ever-changing outlooks. Each spacious air conditioned suite offers a secluded, shaded veranda complete with private plunge pool, a living room with a fireplace, a large retractable skylight above the bed, and an ensuite bathroom with a glass-encased rain shower offering 180º desert views. The two-bedroomed Star Dune Suite is an ideal option for families or groups of friends.

The split-level guest area is an inspired masterpiece of glass, rock and steel. Large glass panels fold away to reveal unobstructed desert vistas. Inviting amenities include a central-island bar, comfortable sitting room, walk-in cellar, interactive kitchen and rim-flow pool. Other signature features include numerous shaded, private spaces; a sunrise-view gym and sunset-facing wellness centre which offers both a treatment room with a private spa-bath, and a separate wet-room spa. The lodge’s Signature Shop showcases Namibia’s finest craft offerings.

Dead Valley lodge is situated inside the Namib – Naukluft Park, in-between Seriem and Elim Dune on the D826 road leading to the world-famous Dead Valley at Sossusvlei. The lodge offers twenty free standing climate-controlled luxury tented chalets each with a panoramic view of the Namib Desert with towering red sand dunes, rugged mountain ranges, and arid desert savannahs. The restaurant serves delicious Namibian – style cuisine whilst guest can relax in the picturesque bar with a swimming pool overlooking the Elim Dune. Games drives are offered in the mornings and afternoons to Sossusvlei and Sesriem Canyons.

Just east of Aus, Klein Aus Vista is nestled in the granite-gneiss hills with magnificent views of the landscape. This is the area where the Namib Desert begins to merge with golden grasses, where wild horses roam free and people once gathered with diamond dreams. Klein Aus Vista provides the perfect base to explore south-western Namibia, as a destination in itself or a perfect halfway stop en route from the canyon to the red dunes of Sossusvlei or vice versa.

The attractive and airy rooms of Desert Horse Inn, are built in a style indicative of the late century farmhouse and painted a deep, rich sienna that glows alluringly in the late afternoon sunshine. Put up feet on your veranda enjoying Klein Aus calm, partake in a day or sunset drive or explore the numerous mountain-bike and walking trails that skirt the rocky hills. Here you will discover old WWI ramparts, an old Hudson motorcar riddled with bullet holes from an almost-forgotten shoot-out with diamond smugglers, viewpoints with extraordinary vistas, springbok on the plains and, if lucky, klipspringer poised on the rocky slopes. Further afield, visit the wild horses at the Garub waterhole, 20km to the west, and the old diamond mining town of Kolmanskop and Lüderitz, 100km onwards. Return in the late afternoon to Klein Aus peace. Relax on the upstairs wooden deck, around the fireplace in the cosy lounge or at the Wild Horse bar until you cannot resist the enticing supper aromas any longer. Outside the sky will be alight with streaks of sunset colour until the twinkling stars and moon appear. And with them lie the promise of a good nights sleep and the anticipation of a new day.

Right on the doorstep of Namib-Naukluft National Park, not far from Sossusvlei, Desert Homestead and Desert Homestead Outpost are ideally suited for exploring the Namib Sand Sea – a World Heritage Site with some of the highest dunes in the world. Both lodges are located in the Namib Tsaris Conservancy, a private nature reserve of over 150,000 hectares, adjacent to NamibRand Nature Reserve in the west. 

A laid-back atmosphere, panoramic views, extensive pool and terrace facilities, an excellent cuisine and a host of activities are distinguishing features of the lodge. The architecture is a contemporary interpretation of a stud farm’s manor house. Sophisticated furnishings and fittings in the main building as well as the guest cottages echo the theme. The main building houses the restaurant, lobby and lounge. 

Ecological sustainability is our standard for the Ondili Lodges. All of them run entirely on solar energy, including solar water heaters. Process water from the laundry is reused.

Positioned on the edge of a 250-metre high dune, Dune Camp has the most extraordinary views across the Namibrand reserve.  The main areas are spread out across a series of interlocking decks ensuring that the lounge, dining area and tea room all enjoy views across the endless dune landscape to the mountains beyond.  The tented and wooden structures are designed for the desert. The canvas sides can all be opened up capturing the cool breeze in the hot summer months, and in winter keeping you warm when the canvas sides are rolled down.

Dune camp has a wonderful charm which appeals to a traveler looking for a down to earth but still luxurious experience. The main areas are intimate and the fire pit encourages conversation between guests.  We seat our guests at a long shared table for dinner but private tables can be requested.

You might also opt for the scenic drive with spectacular views overlooking the vast gravel plains contrasted with the Tsaris and Naukluft mountain massifs of the Namib Desert.

Namibia is about magnificent sunsets, while sipping on your beverage of choice, before heading off to unwind around the blazing campfire in our African firepit. You might even be fortunate enough to encounter some of the wildlife coming to quench their thirst at the waterhole a few meters away.

For dinner, we have a 4 course set menu, varying daily, that will tickle the taste buds with our Namibian delights. Dinner is served either in the restaurant, or outside under the stars in our garden, depending on the weather.
