Built on a raised, wrap-around railway sleeper private deck using entirely recycled materials, Sitatunga Private Island can accommodate up to eight guests as part of Great Plains latest Okavango Delta water-based Réserve-Collection Safari Camp.

Sitatunga’s design tells the story of the Okavango, a camp surrounded by water referenced to a Robinson Crusoe experience, and one that has had indigenous fishermen in the region for over 200 years. Those fishermen designed and used fishing baskets and traps made from reeds in the shape of a funnel so Dereck Joubert took this reference and designed the rooms as tents hanging inside of giant bamboo fisherman baskets. The interiors as a result draw on a colour range that you can see by looking out at the Okavango, misty greens, and light-bleached woods.

You’ll find Nokanyana’s 10 luxury tents on the bank of the Khwai River, nestled in the lush bush overlooking a large flood plain frequented by Africa’s wildlife, so you can watch elephants, antelope and giraffe from your room. The seven luxury rooms and three family suites all have wonderful panoramic views of the surrounding bush.

The 10 luxury tents are spacious, light and airy with king-size beds and large private decks. All have en-suite bathrooms with double sinks and two large rain showers: one inside and one outside. The bathrooms feature contemporary layouts with views of the bush across the room (the toilet and shower are in separate private sections), so you’ll never miss a moment of the continuously changing landscape.

The three family suites are positioned away from the main area and the rest of the rooms allowing Nokanyana to welcome children from the age of six. The suites are set up for a family of four (a fifth bed can easily be added if required).

Extending from the Okavango River, the Khwai River forms part of the northern border of the Moremi Game Reserve. Nokanyana overlooks the spot where the Khwai and Mababe Rivers join, creating a beautiful environment in which to relax and watch the wildlife pass by.

Nokanyana offers some of the best game viewing in the world — directly from the rooms and the guest facilities ­– and exceptional game drive opportunities in the area. Days can be spent exploring the area, or simply relaxing and waiting for the wildlife to come by.

Mokolwane is a small, relaxed camp in one of the largest, and almost untouched, parts of the Okavango Delta. Set amongst a sprinkling of Mokolwane palms, in the Xudum concession (NG29), you’ll find it tucked away in 200 000-hectares of wilderness. Teeming with herds of elephant and all the Okavango predators, with so much space and so much action, it’s no surprise that National Geographic and Netflix filmmaker Brad Bestelink has chosen to base himself here. This is leopard country. These territorial cats love it here so much, that the area boasts the third highest density recorded anywhere in Africa. Mokolwane is a special little camp, big on adventure. And being the only camp for miles around, a great place to breath in the stillness and solitude.

Thamo Telele is a 250-hectare private game reserve located on the outskirts of the iconic safari town of Maun, the gateway to the Okavango Delta.

This intimate and comfortable lodge was recently refurbished and opened its tent-flaps again in March 2022. With an enviable location bordering the Thamalakane River, Thamo Telele can accommodate 22 guests and offers space for relaxation and tranquillity, making it the ideal stop-over either side of any safari.

Set amongst a lush forest of old growth leadwood and acacia trees, each luxury safari-style tent and thatched chalet is a little bush haven. Surrounded by habitats of river, riverine, woodland and dry savanna this wildlife sanctuary is full of life and brimming with plains game and birdlife.

The abundant bird life will set any twitcher twitching and anyone with a soft spot for giraffe will be in a state of pure bliss as they get up close and learn more about our resident herd from our team of naturalists. In fact, the lodge was named after our littlest resident giraffe, born during our refurb in 2021. Surprisingly tall from birth, she was soon called Thamo Telele, meaning ‘long neck’ in Setswana. As we observed her growing day-by-day, she captured our hearts in such a profound way, that we decided to rename our ‘new’ lodge after her.

On the western bank of the vast and idyllic Weboro Lagoon, nestled between palm trees and under large shady figs, Mopiri’s 10 luxury rooms all have panoramic views of the Okavango Delta.

Long winding boardwalks connect the seven luxury rooms and three family suites with the main area; the pool and the jetty give you an opportunity to explore the surroundings from an elevated position.

The luxury rooms are spacious, light and airy with king-size beds and large private decks. All have en-suite bathrooms with double sinks and large rain showers. The bathrooms are connected to the bedrooms via a short corridor, making the most of the wonderful views across the lagoon.

The three family suites are positioned on an island close by, accessed by a walkway, allowing Mopiri to welcome children of all ages. All 10 rooms are generously spaced out offering privacy and the peace and quiet needed to fully enjoy the tranquillity of the Okavango Delta.

Mopiri is surrounded by crystal clear Delta water on all sides; depending when you stay, you may be able to see hippopotamus, elephants and Sitatunga in their natural habitat.

At Mopiri you set your own pace. You may choose to spend your days exploring the Okavango Delta on one of the many activities available, or simply kicking back and enjoying the tranquil surroundings of island life.

Kiri Camp is named after the Kiri channel which flows passed the island on which the camp is situated. The camp is raised on wooden decks to give one a view of the mighty Kiri floodplains which stretch out in front of the camp. The luxury tents are designed to incorporate the surrounding ebony forest under which the camp is situated. The use of wood, canvas and reeds are primary to the architecture of this stunning camp. 

Kiri Camp offers a combination of both game drives and water activities. Based on a private concession, these activities will take you to some of the more remote areas in the delta, previously inaccessible. A motorboat ride during peak flood times promises to enthrall you and captivate you, with the chance of seeing iconic wildlife from the river. Glide on quiet mokoro’s through the water lilies and view wildlife from below as you sail along at water level height. The wildlife in the Kiri area is diverse and plentiful, renown for its lion and buffalo interactions and rare wild dog numbers.

Affordable Botswana Tented Camp North of Khwai

MmaTsebe Tented Camp is an authentic tented bushcamp carefully positioned within an ancient riverine forest along the Mbudi River in Khwai on the Northern boundary of Moremi Game Reserve in Botswana.

MmaTsebe Tented Camp is located within a secluded private position of 25 hectares in Khwai along the Mbudi River. 30 minutes’ game drive from North Gate Moremi Game Reserve, 30 minutes’ game drive from Khwai airstrip, and 3.5 hours drive from Maun. The popular game rich area of Khwai shares borders with Chobe National Park, Savuti and Moremi Game Reserve, MmaTsebe Tented Camp therefore has easy access to these iconic game locations in Northern Botswana.

Little Machaba is situated in the game rich Khwai area. The Khwai Concession is a 180 000 hectare reserve situated in the north eastern Okavango adjacent to the Moremi Game Reserve. Little Machaba is situated on the same island as Machaba Main Camp, but is run separately from Machaba Main Camp. The camp is built in the classic 1950’s style, with luxury safari tents, en-suite bathrooms and living areas, not forgetting the romantic outdoor showers. All the tents are situated on decks and the pathways to the tents meander between the large riverine trees. The Main dining and bar area are also on wooden decks overlooking a large flood plain.

The Gomoti Plains is located in a community run concession, on the edge of the Gomoti river system southeast of the Okavango Delta. The Gomoti tree is locally known as the water fig and grows alongside waterways in the Okavango delta. It’s a smallish tree which sometimes grows no bigger than a bush. The area is known for its large concentrations of wildlife which thrive on the Gomoti plains and waterways. The Gomoti trees line the waterways and provide excellent cover for nesting water birds such as herons and storks.This exclusive area has been a well-kept secret for many years. The Gomoti region has been the local haunt of many of the older guides and Okavango dwellers who refer to it in nostalgic terms when they used to camp along this river system.This new camp has 10 luxury tents which include 2 luxury family tents and 8 luxury double tents, all with en-suite bathroom facilities.. In addition to day and night 4WD game drives, the camp offers water based activities such as mokoro excursions and motor boat trips.

Inspired by the incredible breathtaking scenery and beauty of the biggest in-land delta in the world, the ‘Okavango Delta’. After the first visit to the Delta in 2016 with the family.

It was clear we had to showcase this to the whole world!!! It was also clear that conservation had to be top of the agenda including preserving the culture of the tribes who live and breathe the Delta.

The name Xaoo means ‘Buffalo’ in the native language of Sesarwa, comes from the frequent Buffalo visits to the nearby marshes of the Camp.

The Chalets

Xaoo Safari Camp is a tented camp, off of the tiny village of Xoxao in the Okavango Delta. The village is home to a diverse Batswana tribe which includes a combination of Basarwa, Bayei and Baherero natives. Situated seventeen kilometers west of Shorobe Village in to the heart of the eastern part of the Okavango Delta.

Six gorgeous luxury tented and raised chalets with a capacity of a maximum of three or four people per chalet (two adults and two children or 3 adults). The chalets are ideal for couples, small families, and friends. The chalets are well spaced apart ensuring privacy and a personal experience. An excellent place for your much-needed rest in between your activities. Chalets are in-suite and equipped with:

-Super-sized King size Bed or two ¾ beds (based on preference)

-Sleeper couch

-Indoor bath tub

-Outdoor shower

-Multiple socket charging point

Wild Life

The lagoon which is situated on the longest side of the property has an abundance interested small swamp animals e.g. fish, frogs, and these are a big attractant for those who feed on them.

Water-based and land activities are offered at Xaoo, and these are carried out just ten minutes away in a private concession that shares a border with the Moremi Game Reserve. The area boasts of an abundance of wildlife including but not limited to the Big five.
This private concession is a hidden gem, and guests get to experience very low volumes of tourists moving about, and therefore an intimate experience with nature. Activities include mokoro excursions, game viewing drive, walking safaris, cultural village tours, overnights on Island as well as at Khwai/Moremi, Elephant sanctuary tour, Helicopter scenic flights and massage spas.

Conservation

As a means of playing a part in conservation, the whole camp is solar powered. The vegetation in and around the lodge has largely been left as is with a view to preserve nature in its natural form. We fiercely protect and value everything from an ant to an elephant.

Giving Back

Xaoo Safari camp is situated off of the village of Xuxao with no more than 300 natives scattered in and around the NG35 concession. Our vision is to support this community with basic necessities in the areas of a) fresh water b) food suppliers c) and sustainable employment. Guests are invited and encouraged to leave any donation which can enable us to fulfil this noble cause.

Chobe Mopani Forest Lodge overlooks a thriving waterhole in the remote Kasane Forest Reserve, a relatively unexplored concession bordering the Zambezi National Park in the northern stretches of Botswana. The closest safari tourist town is Kasane, which has an airport that is open to both domestic and international flights.

The lodge’s claim to fame is its prolific elephant herds, many of which can be spotted congregating around the lodge’s waterhole - it’s not uncommon to spend evenings dining with elephants. In addition to Chobe Mopani Forest Lodge’s enviable location, it is also fast becoming a sought-after safari destination for large groups seeking a lodge of superior quality with African inspired design.

Gomoti Private is a small exclusive camp attached to Gomoti Plains Camp, offering total exclusivity and privacy for its guests. The design of the camp includes a small intimate dining and lounge area with its own private plunge pool. Okavango Explorers Camp is an Explorer Collection safari camp located in the southwest of Botswana’s private Selinda Reserve. At the intersection of the upper Okavango Delta water system and the famed Selinda Spillway, the camp’s location is a unique combination of two iconic ecosystems. This area may be new to guests but has been known to us for many years as one teeming with wildlife.

The 130,000-hectare Selinda Reserve in northern Botswana is a prime predator and elephant habitat. This location has been handpicked for its access to some of the highest concentrations of wildlife in the region, along the southernmost section of Selinda Spillway. Lion, leopard and wild dogs hunt these parts regularly. There are good densities of giraffe, buffalo and exciting and now rare antelope like roan, sable and eland. At the peak of the dry season in late September, the Selinda Reserve has been documented to be home to over 9,000 elephants concentrated along this river system. For lovers of elephants, this is the place to be in the dry season. There is phenomenal birdlife in this area for those looking for some ‘lifers’.

Situated on the banks of the Boteti River, a tributary originating in the core of the Okavango Delta, lies the Boteti Tented Safari Lodge. The remote location is situated away from all man-made distractions allowing one to truly immerse in the pristine natural surroundings and enjoy unrivalled wildlife encounters. The Lodge blends into the surroundings while maintaining all the comforts and necessities required to create a wonderful safari feel and experience. Large spanning decks are nestled and spread out between majestic acacia trees and the unmistakable “Mogotse” bush resembling the horns of a Gemsbok are customary to the Lodge’s ambience. Breath-taking Mboma Island Expeditions is a piece of pristine paradise located in one of three remote area's on the tip of the game rich Moremi Game Reserve. Based out of Mboma Island on the floodplains of the meeting point of the Delta’s fresh waters and the Moremi’s savannah terrain, means that Mboma is ideal for both land and water based safaris. An opportunity for guests to enjoy a charming African authenticity in a mobile camp that promises to deliver a wild experience in the Okavango Delta.

This magical mobile Island camp has 5 light Meru-style canvas tents equipped with twin beds and en-suite, open-air bathrooms. Everything about this camp is eco-friendly, from the sole use of solar-power, to bucket showers, and chemical toilets. Tents are fully furnished using the finest linen and kitted out in the creature comforts from home. Decor is in perfect harmony with the surrounds; neutral tones are interrupted by bold pops of colour that reflect the colourful spirit of Botswana. The Meru tents are joined by a network of lantern-lined pathways, and the main areas include a boma, safari dining tent and lounge, all quintessential elements of a classic safari.

Mboma boasts views of the endless floodplains fringed by real fan palms. Dotted across the plains you’ll notice scores of red lechwe and lumbering elephants. At night the powerful guttural roars from lions advertising their territory can often be heard echoing across the flat landscape. There are abundant cat families in the area, meaning that there is a high chance of spotting a few local prides while out on game drive. Elephants are purveyors of fine water, so there is plenty of scope to witness high concentrations of elephants in the wild. Because Moremi’s ecosystem is so diverse, the team at Mboma have ensured that all aspects of safaris are covered, from mokoro to boating and game drives. Stay at breath-taking Mboma and immerse yourself in the fascinating ecosystem of this World Heritage Site.

Xaxaba Camp is run by Afrika Ecco Safaris from the local Xaxaba community. It is located on a private island deep within the heart of the Okavango Delta, a world-heritage site renown for its abundance of wildlife. This is a true rustic, wilderness experience ideal for the wild at heart. The focus here is on the community, the wildlife and untouched views in an area not known to many visitors. The island overlooks the famous Chief’s Island, and guests will have the opportunity to enjoy walks on this island. There are plenty of activities to enjoy that cater for the adventurous. 

Expect mokoro trips in traditional canoes, fishing and visits to the local community village. There’s even an opportunity to celebrate golden hour in a special sundowner spot on the banks of the intricate waterways. Boat excursions are also availble, but only when the water levels are adequate (generally June/July) which you'd need to check beforehand.  

Mma Dinare is set in a private 272 km2 concession, adjacent to Moremi Game reserve on the south-eastern side of the Delta. It overlooks the Gomoti River and its flood plains and the camp has been designed to embrace the natural surroundings. This is a 100% eco-friendly development, featuring the latest in solar and waste technology.

Accommodation consists of nine stylish tents, including a family tent all of which overlook the Gomoti River. There is also one guides tent.

Both central areas have been built with open, thatched spaces that allow guests to relax and enjoy the natural surroundings, whilst watching wildlife and birds from the comfort of an armchair or the bar. The swimming pool and curio shop complete the luxurious, relaxed feel.

Known for its soul and appeal to safari traditionalists, Pom Pom Camp is an eco-friendly camp located on Pom Pom Island in a private concession in the heart of the Okavango Delta and on the head waters of the Xudum river system. The area lies on the western boundary of the Moremi Game Reserve and not only offers superb Okavango scenery but also consistent game viewing all year round. Pom Pom is the real deal for those who live & breath Africa.

Pom Pom Camp consists of nine luxury safari tents in true traditional safari style, furnished with en-suite, semi-open ablutions. The tents are uniquely positioned under the shade of the surrounding trees that overlook the Pom Pom lagoon. Our family safari tent, which is close to the main lodge, accommodates four (two adults and two children), with en-suite facilities.

The Camp is set in the tree line overlooking Pom Pom lagoon and each tent has stunning, private views. The camp also boasts a dining room, lounge, bar and swimming pool.

The safari never stops at Meno a Kwena, a hidden gem of a camp perched on a rocky clifftop above the Boteti River in Botswana. But sometimes, the best game viewing is where you least expect it, and at Meno, it’s right in front you. At just 90 minutes by road from Maun, Meno is a good option if you’re travelling as a group, or with little ones (or even big ones!). Nestled on a lush palm island in the heart of the northern Okavango Delta, Shinde is an iconic camp, one of the first in Botswana and loved by many. The new Shinde is built in a way that pays homage to its former self. Located on the edge of the Shinde Lagoon, the area simply teems with animal and birdlife.

Shinde was rebuilt in 2020, the camps unique main area is built in a “treehouse style” comprising of lounges, dining areas (indoor and outdoor) and a fire deck all with beautiful views over a permanent lagoon and under the shade of ebony and mangosteen trees. The new tents and main area provide a luxury experience with a touch of historical charm. The décor of the new camp can be described as “the best of nature within an authentic safari design – still with the understated, friendly and intimate Ker & Downey Botswana feel”. Each tent comprises of a large bedroom, en-suite bathroom with indoor and outdoor shower. There is the choice of either a double or twin bed configuration on comfortable three-quarter, extra length or king-sized beds. Every possible comfort has been catered for – from full solar electricity, standing and ceiling fans through to yoga mats and hair dryers! Families are accommodated in a custom build two bedroom shared en-suite bathroom family tent sleeping a maximum of 5 people.

Courtesy of its location Shinde can offer both water and land activities year-round. Motorboats or Mokoro provide a chance to experience the incredible bird, plant and reptile species found in the aquatic habitat of the Okavango Delta. Game drives are conducted by a personal guide in comfortable, specially designed game drive vehicles. When out on game drives our window seat guarantee ensures no more than four guests per vehicle and individual use of a camera mount. For the more adventurous, guided walks are also available while fishing enthusiasts will enjoy fishing for a variety of species such as tilapia and tigerfish.

Shinde is situated on a private concession which allows guided walks, Mokoro excursions and night drives in addition to game drives and motorboat trips. Shinde’s excellent location in the Okavango Delta ensures a combination of permanent water access for year-round water activities and large dry areas for game drive routes. This blend of environments provides the habitat for a consistently wide variety of wildlife, including the elusive sitatunga antelope and a healthy population of leopards.

Fishing is available throughout the year (with exception of January and February), with excellent bream fishing from May to September and superb chances of landing tigerfish during September to mid-November.

The Pangolin Chobe Hotel sits on the plateau overlooking The Chobe River and Namibia’s Caprivi floodplains which stretch out to the far horizon. The Chobe National Park boundary is a few hundred meters away meaning that with our proximity to the gate we are more often than not the fist vehicle through the gate for game drives. Our boats are moored on the river directly below the Hotel and its a quick five minute transfer to get to them and then straight into the park.

The Pangolin Chobe Hotel is also a short transfer from Kasane International Airport and the Zimbabwe and Zambian Borders.

After several decades of setting the standard in the Kalahari,  Jack’s Camp underwent a full rebuild and reopened in 2021.

The brand-new Jack’s Camp pays homage to the property’s enduring and much-loved 1940s campaign style. The guest tents, seven twins and two doubles, are much larger and each is 270 square metres in size. The iconic interiors remain and are embellished with rich textiles from around the world, Natural History Museum cabinets, and an overhead bed cooling system. Ensuite bathrooms have both indoor and outdoor showers and outside, each veranda has a private plunge pool.

The new, larger mess tent is resplendent with the renowned Natural History Museum, library, antique pool table and a well-stocked drinks chest. The iconic nomadic Persian tea tent has been made larger and the shop has been renovated and restocked with new treasures.

Lagoon is perched on the banks of the wild Kwando River, nestled beneath towering ebony and marula trees. The heavily forested site is home to a wide variety of birds and mammals, while elephant and hippo are normally visible from the camp. The stunning views and close proximity of wildlife all contribute to the pervading sense of calm at Lagoon.

Lagoons area in the Kwando Reserve has a well-earned reputation for big game and large herds of elephant and buffalo, especially in the winter months, when herds of up to a thousand are not uncommon. This vast concentration of game attracts the attention of large predators. The Lagoon wild dog pack regularly den close to the camp and the excellent viewing opportunities have led to Lagoons reputation as the place to see wild dog in Botswana.

Seasonally large herds of elephant drink at the river bank near to the camp in full view of the main deck, while pods of hippos are commonly seen languidly sunbathing in the water.

Lagoon accommodates up to 18 guests in nine expansive tents. Each tents private deck, living area, and bathroom all afford picturesque views over the river. Likewise, these views are also perfect to wake up to, in bed. Each tent has an ensuite bathroom with both an indoor and outdoor shower, as well as a bathtub for an enjoyable afternoon soak.

The main areas of the camp include a bar and sitting area, outdoor deck with a swing, dining area, curio shop, orientation centre, and a cosy second-level library overlooking the river.

Adjacent to the main area, is the family tent which has two entrances (one to the twin bedroom and the other to the main bedroom and living area). The family tent shares the same ensuite bathroom facilities.

Another special feature of the camp is the afternoon river cruise. The unique double deck boat allows several guests the opportunity to drift along the river while enjoying spectacular views, mammal and bird life while sipping at your sundowner of choice.

For those guests who enjoy fishing, there is ample room to throw a line in the water while the boat meanders along.

Leroo La Tau is situated on the western bank of the Boteti River, which forms the boundary of the Makgadikgadi Pans National Park. The Boteti River provides a lifeline for the wildlife which inhabit the arid national park and is a critical link in the annual zebra migration. Bakwena translated from Setswana, means people of the crocodile, this refers not only to our situation, but is also one of the largest tribes in Botswana; naturally the owners of the Chobe Bakwena lodge are both Bakwena!

Owners Jenny and Adam Young have worked throughout Botswana, managing bush camps and lodges and running their own safari company. “Having spent so much our time working in luxury lodges, we wanted our guests to enjoy similar levels of comfort at a reasonable rate and more importantly be able to take comfort that in choosing Bakwena as their destination, they have also made the right choice for the environment.

We acquired our land in 2000 and since then we have been growing our dream and planting the seeds of the indigenous riverine woodland that guests will find here today.

“When I designed Selinda Camp as a real indoor/outdoor experience when on safari in Botswana, I wanted to pay homage to elephants, what we have done to them, and how we should apologise in many ways. The art in the camp, starting with life-sized elephant skull sculptures as you enter the main area, reflect that. My brother, Keith Joubert’s art, hangs on the wall, and Beverly’s images adorn the suites. Selinda is a handmade camp in so many ways. Moulded around the trees, Selinda visualises five essential elements: Earth, Wind, Water, Fire and Metal. The managers will tell you, though, if you are interested. But as a result, I think that Selinda Camp has a perfect balance. Oh, and elephants swim in front of camp too!” says Dereck Joubert, CEO and owner of Great Plains Conservation

Set in one of the most pristine wilderness areas left on our planet, the new Selinda Camp rests on the banks of Botswana’s Selinda Spillway as it enters the Linyanti River. The private 130,000 hectare Selinda Reserve boasts large elephant herds, regular sightings of the Selinda pack of African wild dogs, and the famous Selinda lion pride recently featured in the National Geographic film “Birth of a Pride” by Dereck and Beverly Joubert. The area has a sense of remoteness, a true spirit of Africa, and an excellent example of Botswana bush embodying various species and rare animals, offering the perfect safari experience in Botswana.

The camp has three expansive guest suites under thatch, indoor en-suite bathrooms, a large private veranda with outdoor seating, and a private swimming pool. Each guest suite is unique, designed with its particular colour palette and theme. A fifth element, ‘metal’, is also incorporated into the design. Every space enhances what Livingstone would have had, what he would have travelled with and found along with his expeditions. But beyond that, we go back to the Robinson Crusoe feel, including rope textures, suites under thatch, hammocks, lots of space, nautical elements, and salvaged wood.

In addition to the three main suites, the separate 2-bedroomed Selinda Suite (like its fellow Zarafa Dhow Suite and the Duba Plains Suite) consists of a two-bedroom tented suite. The Selinda Suite operates exclusively, as guests enjoy their private vehicle, safari guide, chef, manager/butler, and entrance to their residence.

The open vehicle safari drives, guided bush walks, boating, tracking, birding and other bespoke viewing activities are all designed to place you in front of the best wildlife the area has to offer. Duba Explorers Camp, a perfect safari camp for any Botswana safari, is tucked away in the northeast corner of Botswana’s Duba Plains Concession, a 33,000-hectare private reserve. Due to its location in the Okavango Delta’s northern reaches, the permanent floodplain dominates the surrounding landscapes, interspersed with seasonal floodplains and grasslands and pockets of mopane and acacia woodlands.

Duba Explorers Camp is situated on an island surrounded by the pristine Okavango Delta and enjoys its separate traversing area, separated from Duba Plains Camp. The camp has year-round shade under a canopy of mature jackalberry, leadwood, mangosteen, and sycamore-fig trees. Duba Explorers, part of Great Plains’ Explorers Collection and was designed by Dereck and Beverly Joubert, National Geographic Explorers themselves, embodies the golden age of a Botswana safari and the spirit of exploration. The camp consists of five airy canvas tents, each raised on decking, stylishly furnished with a campaign writing desk, private verandah, and en-suite facilities. Guests wake up to panoramic views of the Delta floodplains and, during the flood season, the water channels link to open water filled with flowering water lilies and tall papyrus. Under sweeping marquee canvas, the central area on raised decking offers guests an open-concept dining and lounge area.

Duba Explorers Camp is on an island surrounded by beautiful landscapes and watercourses as it sits in the heart of Botswana’s northern Okavango Delta floodplains. The camp is accessible only by a gum pole bridge. During your siesta, lounge on the daybed on your veranda, absorbing the peacefulness and tranquillity of your surroundings. During the flood season, you might even be lucky to catch sight of spotted neck otters swimming and eating. Listen out for the prolific birdlife. At night, let the hippos sing you to sleep. Sometimes, the roar of a lion cracks through the night as he calls out to his pride.

During a stay at Duba Explorers Camp, guests step into the shoes of the early adventurers. Explore the water channels associated with the Ngoga River system by boat or traditional canoes (mekoro), meandering through channels created by hippos and elephants. The mekoro allows you to glide silently through the channel systems and experience a peaceful water world around you. With over 400 bird species, birding is unsurpassed, with spectacular species like the malachite kingfisher zipping past you in a burst of colour. Vehicle safaris in this paradise allow for exciting encounters with the predators resident in the area. On guided walks, explore the islands, wetlands, and plains, following the tracks and interpreting the signs of the wild. Guests might even be lucky enough to get a glimpse of a rare sitatunga or an elusive leopard. Enjoy the excitement of catch and release fishing, where one can study the various delta fish species up close.

The unique flooding cycles of Botswana’s Okavango Delta create a mosaic of habitats from permanent wetlands to seasonal floodplains to woodlands and grasslands around Duba Explorers Camp and fosters an incredible diversity of wildlife. Plains created by dropping water levels in the dry season (December to April) form a perfect habitat for zebra, wildebeest, kudus, and tsessebes. The area is frequented by vast herds of elephant, buffalo and zebra that attract iconic predators such as lion, leopard, cheetah and wild dogs.   The peaceful African night is often punctuated by the lion’s gruff, baritone contact call, wild dogs yipping or hyenas whooping in celebration of meal or morsel. Activities to enjoy on your Linyanti safari include walking safaris, river activities such as mokoro trips, day and night game drives. Linyanti Expeditions offers awe-inspiring birding with Carmine bee-eaters nest on the banks of the Linyanti River. Overlooking a secluded lagoon in the northern Okavango Delta, Kwara offers the ultimate Delta experience. Its location allows access to the permanent waterways of the Delta as well as expansive dry land areas, admired for their quality game viewing.

Kwara offers, within the exclusive concession in which it is located, a wide variety of activities. In addition to game drives, both day and night, the camp offers mokoro trips, as well as fishing (spinning equipment is provided but fly fisherman need to bring their own equipment). Boat trips are on a double-decker boat that visits the Godikwe Lagoon in the waters of the Moremi Game Reserve, which is known for the abundant varieties of birdlife especially during nesting season.

Kwara is known for its consistent sightings of predators, including lion, cheetah, leopard and on rare occasion – white rhino! Herds of elephants also frequent the area, as well as giraffe, zebra, sitatunga, lechwe, impala and hippos.

We are pleased to announce that Kwara camp has reopened after an extensive rebuild, on 1st September 2019.

Kwara sits on the beautiful lagoon of the original site, and is a larger and more luxurious camp than its predecessor.

The décor of Kwara pays homage to the authentic African style of Kwando Safaris, and has 9 canvas tents. Each tent has a spacious deck overlooking the lagoon, an ensuite bathroom with both indoor and outdoor showers and a gorgeous bath – all of which have views out to the floodplains. There is a ceiling fan in the room and mosquito nets around the beds.

The main area of the camp, sits in the centre of the camp, has a dining area, lounge and curio shop. Kwara also has 2 small pool areas at each end of the camp providing guests with more private lounge areas. Each poolside has a small bar and pool loungers for guests to enjoy the afternoon siesta period. There is one additional pilot/guide tent of a lesser standard than the other guest tents.

Like other Kwando properties, Kwara offers a digital detox experience (no wifi, no cell phone connectivity) allowing our guests to truly enjoy and embrace the natural setting of the camp. All activities will be accompanied by a guide and tracker. However unlike other Kwando Safaris camps, all 9-seater vehicles take a maximum of 4 guests. We operate game drives (off-road and at night), walking safaris, mokoros, boat cruises, and seasonal fishing. The site is 15 minutes from the Kwara airstrip.

The camp is a small, comfortably appointed place. Oddballs’ Enclave can accommodate a maximum of 10 guests, in five twin or double bedded mini-Meru tents, making it a classic and intimate camp. The tents are on elevated wooden decks, each with a semi-detached private bathroom with an al fresco bucket shower, and hot and cold running water. The Enclave is the perfect destination for a small group or family to spend time together.

The molapo that extends beyond the camp is, depending on the time of year, covered with water or entirely dry. Nxai Pan is located on the western edge of the fossil pan from which the camp takes its name. The camp faces east over the open grasslands of the pans. The biggest draw to Nxai Pan National Park are the zebras that migrate by the thousands to the area – the second largest land animal migration in Southern Africa.

Day trips to Baines’ Baobabs are highly popular, and include a picnic lunch at the site. These age-old trees were immortalised in paintings by the artist and adventurer Thomas Baines in 1862. If you were to compare Baines’ paintings to the scene today, you would find that after 150 years, the trees are nearly identical – testament to the age of these magnificent giants.

Another classic activity at Nxai Pan is a walk with one of the San bushmen trackers, an informative walk that takes place within the camp’s footprint. Learn about how the San used to live nomadically: how they used to hunt, gather food, water sources, and which plants were used for medicinal purposes. Their wealth of true bush knowledge is unparalleled, and one of our guests’ favourite experiences at our desert camps.

The camp’s nine tents face the waterhole, with the main area being the central best place for game viewing from the water hole. Frequent visitors to the water hole include elephants, cheetah, as well as the migratory herds of zebra (usually) from late December to early April, however this is entirely dependent on the summer rainfall in Botswana which affects the migratory cycle.

The minimalistic white-washed design of the camp is in keeping with the surrounding white salt pans. Nxai Pan accommodates a maximum of eighteen guests in thatched units specially designed to provide a constant and comfortable temperature throughout the year, when seasonal temperatures can fluctuate from below freezing to well over 45 degrees Celsius.

Nata Lodge is an oasis set among the Mokolwane palms on the edge of the Makgadikgadi Salt Pans.  It is ideally situated close to the entrance to the Nata Sanctuary and is the junction to the Okavango, Chobe and Francistown areas.

The lodge offers 22 luxury air conditioned thatched chalets built on stilts and set in rustic African style, with en suite bathrooms including indoor baths and outdoor showers.

10 luxury safari tents are built on raised wooden platforms which are nestled under the lodges many marula trees.  These tents feature en suite bathrooms and include all the amenities offered in any of the lodge’s chalets.

The camping site provides full ablution facilities with hot and cold showers as well as central electrical power banks.

Guest areas include a restaurant, swimming pool, gift shop and a bar/lounge area.

The shady tree canopy surrounding the lodge is a hive of activity, with a bird feeding area and active water feature providing the bird watcher with the opportunity of viewing a variety of species from the comfort of the pool deck, open bar or restaurant.

The Nata River delta feeds the Sua Pan in the Nata sanctuary and forms the breeding ground for a host of water birds including pelicans and flamingo in their thousands, transforming the shore line into a pink haze blending into the western sky.   

For keen bird watchers and naturalists, Nata Lodge offers open vehicle excursions into the Nata Sanctuary.   Mammal species in the sanctuary include antelope such as springbok, as well as springhares, jackals and foxes.

However the main attraction is the abundance of bird life.  Around 165 bird species, including king-fishers, eagles, ostriches, pelicans, spoonbills and both greater and lesser flamingos, have been recorded.

Chobe Safari Lodge is situated in Kasane on the banks of the Chobe River and shares a border with Chobe National Park. It is the oldest lodge in Chobe and was established in 1959. Right on our doorstep is the meeting of four African countries: Botswana, Namibia, Zimbabwe and Zambia. “Zarafa Camp,” says Dereck Joubert, CEO of Great Plains Conservation, “is a beautiful sweeping design we had a little fun with and epitomises the romantic Botswana safari many seek. The décor is hand made in a colonial style, all from reclaimed wood, which we purchased after the 2005 Tsunami to support local artisans in the East. I love spending an afternoon drifting quietly along the edges of the Zibadianja Lake in our houseboat. Sharing great stories as we watch the setting sun cast long shadows over huge herds of hippos and crocodiles or gently track elephant bulls as they swim the deep water from island to island. We recently watched painted dogs (wild dogs) chase impala into this lake once, only to have it stolen by a hippo!

Zarafa Camp was the first camp where we added our beautiful copper baths to the suite’s bathrooms. That romantic Botswana safari touch has become a sort of signature for us in all our camps, especially our Réserve Collection camps. We inserted Zanzibar doors to the suite’s designs, and the camp’s name Zarafa (meaning Beloved One) is a nod to the story of the first giraffe to be taken from Africa to Europe as a gift to King Charles X of France. The Zarafa Dhow Suite pays homage to this story and is an extension of the camp, and that story, downstream from the main camp.

We are, in essence, storytellers, of which there is still a beautiful ancient history of in Africa to be told.”

Zarafa Camp is located on the private 130,000-hectare (320,000-acre) Selinda Reserve. The Selinda Reserve links Botswana’s Okavango Delta with the Linyanti waterways, and every area of the camp offers stunning views over the Zibadianja Lagoon, the source of the Savuti Channel.

Zarafa Camp’s four guest suites individually measure over 100 square meters (1000 square feet) under flowing canvas. Each suite rests on raised reclaimed railway sleeper decking with the interiors consisting of a lounge area that flows to a beautiful bedroom and an open layout indoor bathroom complete with a copper claw-foot bath. Under a canopy of ebony trees, the main camp area offers guests a sizable main lounge, library, dining area and bush boutique. An outdoor gym and in-room massage are available. The camp has no equal when it comes to its environmental credentials. The camp’s construction consists of recycled hardwoods and canvas. All the camp’s electricity comes from its solar farm, and a biogas system converts vegetable waste into usable cooking gas.

The private Selinda Reserve is home to leopard, lion, cheetah, elephant, buffalo, red lechwe, zebra and giraffe. A 30 minute vehicle transfer from Mashatu Lodge is a refuge that is very different. The Mashatu Tent Camp is almost one with the environment; blink and you might miss it! Duba Plains Camp, the epitome of the Botswana safari, sits in the heart of the Okavango Delta. The Zarafa Dhow Suite is undoubtedly one of our most beautiful Great Plains Conservation Réserve Collection safari camps in Botswana. Zarafa means “the beloved one” or “the lovely one” in Arabic. The name comes from a giraffe presented to Charles X of France in 1826 by the Viceroy of Egypt. The giraffe was transported from Africa to France in a traditional Dhow.

Today the Zarafa Dhow Suite is a stunning two-bedroom tented suite located on the private 130,000-hectare (320,000-acre) Selinda Reserve of northern Botswana. The 210 square meters (2,260 square foot) suite is on raised decking under flowing canvas. Entering through the wooden Lamu door, exclusivity takes on new meaning.

Kanana is a hidden jewel set on the Xudum River in the southwest Okavango Delta.

The area encompasses a necklace of islands dotted with palms, figs, ebony and knob thorn trees, and is home to myriad of birds, plants and animals.  The nature of the habitat means it is the perfect place to experience the diversity of species found within the Okavango Delta.

Dependent on the height of annual floods, the level of water transforms this camp into a true water experience and in the early months of the year you may actually enjoy the visible spectacle of the water rising around the camp.

Wilderness Vumbura Plains epitomises the ultimate Okavango Delta luxury safari, offering both land and water experiences.

Vumbura Plains is as lavish and lush as its beautiful surroundings. Dreamy Delta waterways, green island woodlands and golden grasses, teeming with an ongoing wildlife parade - ever-changing with the seasons and always awe-inspiring.  

Lebala means wide open spaces, and the camp is located in the Kwando Reserve’s 232,000 hectares of private unfenced wilderness. Here, the southerly flowing Kwando River disappears into the vast marshland to the east, outside of the Kwando Reserve. Lebala sits on the floodplains of the Kwando River and the special ecosystem is home to a wide variety of Africa’s plains game such as zebra, wildebeest, impala, giraffe, and tsessebe. The wonderful variety of wildlife also includes elephant, hippo, buffalo and the ever present predators of lion, cheetah and hyena. Lebala’s location away from the dense mopane woodland to the east of the Reserve facilitates the ease of traversing the concession looking for big game.

The camp itself is comprised of nine custom designed tents, with unique mosquito net walls, allowing an unobstructed flow of cooling breezes and stunning views. Each spacious tent has its own viewing deck, bathroom and luxurious double outside showers.

There is also one family tent which consists of an additional twin bedroom within the unit itself, ensuring that parents and young children sleep in the same tent for their peace of mind.

The main areas of the camp include a small swimming pool, a communal fire place and dining room, a curio shop, bar and lounge area complemented with a small library.

Situated in the Eastern Caprivi, Zambezi Province of Namibia, a narrow strip of country on the northern bank of the Chobe River, Chobe Savanna Lodge overlooks the vast floodplains of the Chobe National Park’s Puku Flats. Moremi Crossing is a 16 tent, eco friendly camp built on a palm fringed island surrounded by the Moremis game-rich seasonal floodplains and overlooking Chiefs Island. Guma Lagoon Camp is situated along the banks of the Guma Lagoon on the north western side of the Okavango Delta in Botswana.

Guma offers both self-catering and full board accommodation, which are provided in spacious canvas chalets, all en suite and located on the edge of the lagoon, each with its own private view.

The self-catering option provides a fully equipped kitchen with all utensils, crockery and fridge/ freezer.

For the full board option a set menu offers an array of various dishes which are served on the deck overlooking the lagoon.

When wakening in the morning with the sunrise over the lagoon streaming into your chalet, wander down to the main area and enjoy a complimentary cup of tea or coffee served on the deck.

Alternatively there are 7 campsites under shady trees with private ablutions.   Campers have access to the self-catering kitchen, and are also most welcome to dine in the main restaurant.

Dinner needs to be pre-ordered each morning as all meals are freshly prepared.  Vegetarians and children are catered for.

Guma Lagoon Camp is truly a fishermans paradise and bird watchers haven.   With the abundance of fish species in the Okavango Panhandle, the camp is the perfect area for spin or fly-fishing, and actively supports a catch-and-release policy for all fish species.

For those who want to fish the mighty Okavango River, experienced local guides will accompany you on a 40-minute boat ride from camp that passes through a narrow meandering network of channels.  

The Guma area comprises many small lagoons, countless little palm fringed islands, narrow winding waterways amongst dense papyrus and reeds and the large Guma Lagoon itself.

Adventurous safari experiences not to be missed are Guma Lagoon Camp’s choice of day trips or overnight camping mokoro trails that take you into the heart of the Okavango.

You will be poled through the tranquil channels that link the extensive flood plain system to the main river.   Water lily beds, palm islands and papyrus stands abound making for the most scenic of experiences.   

There is always a chance of seeing large herds of red lechwe bounding through the water and passing elephants feeding amongst the lush wetland vegetation.

Savute Safari Lodge is currently closed for a complete rebuild, and will re-open in June 2024.

Tau Pan is the first semi-permanent camp inside the Central Kalahari Game Reserve and offers truly incredible views from the elevated ridge of an ancient sand dune, an unusual experience in a land as flat as Botswana, and overlooks the famous Tau Pan - recognised for its stark beauty and remoteness.

Activities offered at Tau Pan are game drives, day trips to the well-known Deception Valley, Sunday, Piper and Passarge Pans, star gazing, and nature walks with Bushman trackers.

‘Tau’ which means lion in Setswana, is so named for the pride of iconic black-maned Kalahari lions who frequent the camp (with a particular preference for the family tent!).

Species that can be found in the Kalahari include oryx, the desert-adapted springbok, jackals, the rare brown hyena, red-crested Korhaan and herds of wildebeest.

As with its sister camp, Nxai Pan, Tau Pan has been constructed with the areas ecologies in mind. Both utilise only solar power for the generation of electricity, heating of water and pumping of water from deep under the Kalahari sands. Waste water is treated in a state-of-the-art sewerage treatment plant and the fully treated water is returned to the sands from whence it came.

9 environmentally adapted en-suite tents including 1 family tent are set on raised decks, affording the same spectacular views over the plains. Each has an indoor and outdoor shower, double-basin vanity, open wardrobe, King-sized double bed, living area and writing desk.

The main area of the camp is set around the fireplace, which is the ideal spot for game viewing down to the waterhole. A telescope is also provided for guests’ use. The bar, lounge, curio shop and dining area all encircle the fire place.

The camp also has a sleep-out deck, which is on the eastern side of the camp. In an area as remote and isolated in the Kalahari desert, the light pollution is minimal to none, and consequently the star-gazing is simply magnificent and unrivalled by most other locations on earth. Having an unobstructed view of the night sky to fall asleep under is a truly memorable experience. The elevated sleep-out deck consists of a double bed, and a basin and WC. The Footsteps Camp is in a remote part of the Okavango Delta and home to two safaris. Firstly ‘Footsteps Across the Delta’ a walking safari and secondly ‘Young Explorers’, a specialist family safari.

One of the three twin bedded tents can be converted into a family unit that sleeps five. Each tent has its own newly refurbished en-suit bathroom including wash basin, porcelain flush toilet and hot water bush shower, even a daily laundry service.

The ‘bush kitchen’ is run by our chef and prepares menus to whet all appetites.

From this wonderful base we are able to offer something very special – the opportunity to explore the wilderness on foot: to get up close and personal with the African bush. It’s not to be missed.

Walking in the Okavango Delta’s wilderness is the highlight of a ‘true safari’ experience. No special training is required as the focus is on exploration and discovery – tracking fresh spoor each morning to reveal the night’s events. Other possible activities include game-drives, Mokoro or fishing trips (subject to water levels). The Footsteps walking experience combines well with the luxuries offered by either Shinde, Dinaka, Okuti or Kanana.

The emphasis is on guided walks which allow you to focus on learning how to track wildlife and understand animal movement, patterns and behaviour. Being on foot instead of in a vehicle also allows you to gain in-depth information on trees, grasses and the finer details.

Kadizora Camp is situated between the Vumbura River and Selinda Spillway. It lies in the remote northern part of the Okavango Delta over-looking a panoramic seasonal floodplain. Giant Marulas, Sycamore figs, Jackalberries and Rain trees provide a canopy of shade throughout the camp. The bar, lounge, reception and dining area form a horse-shoe shape around the sandy fire pit. From there, a decked walkway leads you to an inviting swimming pool with a view over the floodplain.

The Camps accommodation consists of 9 luxury tents and x4 standard tents. The tents are spacious and furnished in a classic style ensuring that time between activities is spent relaxing comfortably. Kadizora is the only camp in the Okavango Delta to offer hot air ballooning. You have the option of booking an early morning hot air balloon flight to soar over the Delta at sunrise and view game from above.

Kadizora Camp also facilitates open vehicle safaris, walking safaris and boating. Mokoro (dug-out canoe) excursions provide a fabulous and traditional way to explore the meandering water channels. Float quietly amongst the water-lilies and experience a spectacular bird lovers’ paradise.

There is the option to arrange a day trip to a traditional village. Visit the church, the clinic, local Primary school and meet family members of the camp staff. Fishing is available in season.

Oddballs Camp is situated on the edge of Chiefs Island, deep in the heart of the Okavango Delta, bordering the Moremi Game Reserve. On arrival, you are met at the airstrip by your personal guide and welcomed to the island. He remains your guide for the duration of your stay.

The camp accommodates 28 guests in 14 3m x 3m canvas rooms (including two family units), thoughtfully created and set on elevated wooden decks shaded by the trees and canvas shelters. Beautiful outdoor showers and ablutions en-suite offer hot and cold running water for a traditional al-fresco bucket shower. A small deck offers a place to relax and view the stunning scenery.

Elephant Valley Lodge is surrounded by the peaceful wilderness of the African bush.  It lies in a unique position over-looking the Lesoma Valley in the Chobe District, which is home to the largest population of African elephant in the world.  The animals and birds move freely in the valley between the game-rich conservation areas of the neighbouring Chobe Game Reserve and the National Parks of Zimbabwe. From the comfort and tranquillity of the Lodge you can watch creatures great and small, dropping by for a thirst quenching drink at the Lodge’s waterhole.

At Elephant Valley Lodge guests will enjoy activities including daily 4 x 4 game viewing safaris and boat cruises along the Chobe River in Chobe National Park.  Day trips to the Victoria Falls either in Zambia or Zimbabwe can easily be arranged. The Lodge has 20 spacious accommodation tents with tea and coffee making facilities, fan, electric blankets in winter, hair dryers, charging points plus en-suite shower and toilet. Eight tents have views over the valley towards the water hole and twelve tents are nestled around the lush forest lawns and swimming pool. 

Sturdy acacia trees form large canopies of shade over the main communal areas and forest tents. The new rim-flow pool is perfect for a refreshing dip and relaxation on the sun loungers. A traditional out-door ‘boma’ serves evening meals and a game viewing platform brings you closer to the valley’s wildlife­. All these facilities have magnificent views over-looking the valley and water-hole.  The waterhole attracts a wide variety of game, particularly elephant, but also giraffe, buffalo, antelope such as waterbuck and kudu, warthogs, honey badgers, jackal, mongoose, predators including leopard, lion, hyena, wild dogs and many more species.

With the services of a private wildlife viewing vehicle and guide, guests explore an area with a sense of remoteness, a true spirit of Africa. The Selinda is an excellent example of a Botswana private reserve offering various species and rare animals to be seen when on safari.

The Selinda Suite is within walking distance of our Selinda Camp. It is themed to resemble that of the thatched village of Sangwali, which used to house 3,000 warriors and who loaned David Livingstone 200 men during his travels. The design represents the meeting place of three cultures, European, Mokololo and Bayei.

Two beautifully appointed suites flank a central, open-air, yet covered, indoor dining and lounge area. Flowing from the main area is a large private veranda and private swimming pool. With an en-suite bathroom and indoor shower, each guest suite is unique, designed with its unique colour palette and theme. A fifth element, ‘metal’, is also incorporated into the design. Every space enhances what Livingstone would have had, what he would have travelled with and found. But beyond that, we go back to the Robinson Crusoe feel, including rope textures, rooms under thatch, hammocks, lots of space, nautical elements and salvaged wood.

The 2-bedroomed Selinda Suite operates exclusively of the main Selinda Camp, much like our Zarafa Dhow Suite and the Duba Plains Suite. The nightly rates include the services of your private vehicle, safari guide, chef, manager/butler and a separate entrance to the residence.

The design of Camp Maru is a deliberate return to the authentic safari camps of days gone by and, with just 6 luxurious tents, it offers one of the most intimate and exclusive safari experiences available in the Delta. The Camp is shaded by a grove of giant Leadwood trees on the edge of an expansive lagoon, filled with grunting hippos and fringed with waving papyrus.
